State of District of Columbia, Cosmetology Certification Requirements

You must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED.

Barber licenses must be renewed on or by September 30th of every odd-numbered year.

Cosmetology licenses must be renewed on or by April 30 over every even-numbered year.

6 cosmetology continuing education units are required for each renewal period. 2 of the hours must be in sanitation and hygiene, the other 4 can be in any other relevant area.

If you're applying to work in the District of Columbia, there is a fee plus a letter showing you have completed and passed similar or equivalent exams, plus have a valid license from your home state.

Educational requirements for the District of Columbia are:

Cosmetologist – 1500 hours
Nail Technician – 350 hours
Skin Care – 125 hours
Hair Braiding — 100 hours
Cosmetology Manager — Cosmetology license plus 500 manager training hours
Cosmetology Instructor — 1000 hours plus 6 months of work experience
Massage Therapist — 500 hours
